FFF's recount

Well, Yesterday, a couple of us played against CO, according to Glennson, that was thei so called "A" team, we played a good match with everyone putting their all into it. Justin was a great keeper, Luke played defend/midfield well, Harold and CC combo was nicely done and Dan was a helluva great defend/midfield.....We drew 3-3 with CO and will be hopefully playing against them in a future date, I personally screwed up the game when i let in the goal that put CO initially ahead of us, thankfully CC scored.2 injuries during the game, none of them ours...so yea...

Today!, by the Final Fantasy Fanatic of Band...FFF for short

Well, today was rated not a really good day, but hey! compared to our previous practices, i rarely hear a word of praise as a whole, heck! i think i heard "Good Job Today Band" once from Springs, and that was the day i came back. The next best thing would've been "Not too bad a practice today Band" that we got round the holdiays. So yea! If you look at things my way, we're actually improving! Well tomorrow is Sports Night, so go blow your lungs out then go scream your voice out, recover over the weekend and be back by Monday.....rmb, as of 12.10, you are LATE!

Views from the second best dota player in the Band

Hi, Ivan here , as my inaugural post here, I'd like to raise an issue that might seem insignificant but to me, is actually quite important.

If any of you here reading this have friends who are consistent bloggers, you can easily relate to what i'm saying here, better still if you yourself are active blogger like L or Kit.

As a blogge myself, i often ask people to read my blog, why? Because it feels good to know that your work is being appreciated. But how do you know people are reading your blog? Well, by actively spreading the word of your blog, you hope to bring more attention to it, heck, if i said 'my sketches' my batch of students will quickly be able to identify Elgyn's blog.

Which brings me to my point, another way of knowing when your blog is being appreciated is by the Cbox, sure, people could spam insults. But in a very slight way, at least you know that the guy came o your blog, read it, wasn't happy, and insulted you. The bottomline? He READ your blog, and to a certain extent, appreciated ita, after all, hate is still a form of passion.

Being the CHSSB blog and all, readership is not really a problem, we have alumnis, the band itself and other school bands reading our blogs, but few would tag. now to me, tagging is participation, it symbolizes the fact that people actually understood and are commenting about it.Remember this March Holiday when Springs told every one at least 3 times about checking the blog?? And yet, people still arrived at around 12.15?I admit, i checked the blog, but did not arrive at 11.45 as stated on the first day, me and a coupls of others arrived at 11 because Dan said 11. Thats beside the point, you would never know how thankful i was when we were not punished for not checking the band blog. Now if Springs had made it compulsory for everyone to TAG, few would be able to ignore the band practice times screaming into their faces.

Overall, this post is meant to encourage 1 and all to tag more frequently, this goes out to the sec 4's too. and to all that can, post more genial posts like this, it seems the bloggers keeping the blog aloft are sec 3's.

Cheerio and Work Hard for the Concert.!!!

Come on Guys.. You can DO IT!!!

To: The Band

Band members...there is a thing that I feel that we have to buck up on.

It is our academic results. Studies have proven that band members do better academically due to higher ordinance levels of critical thinking and more advanced brain developments. We should follow up on this ideology and start working hard towards advance in academic progress. Regardless of how much we love band, how much band contributes to our growth in social, psychological and physical aspects, we are still termed as "student musicians". Remember. "Student Musicians". The term "student" comes first, then "musician". So basically, the socio ideology of being a "student musician" is on the knowledge that we should place our priorities right. Band is important, but studies are equally important. In today's meritocratic and materialistic world, even if the Catholic High School Symphony Band achieves world-class standards, we will still be viewed as a band who is lopsided. Lopsided so much so that the band's studies suffer.

I am not referring to all the band members, but the majority. Indeed, our academic results have shown improvement, but we still need to constantly buck up. For the Secondary 1s, 2s and 3s, Mastery Review 2 is just 5 weeks away. You think that is enough for you to prepare to do well? You really think so? This is the split up of the time.

5 weeks=35 days
35 days= 840 hours

Within the 840 hours,

840 hours
- 280 hours for sleeping (assuming you sleep 8 hours daily)
- 105 hours for eating, bathing, using computer, msn, etc, doing miscellanous stuff (assuming that you spend 3 hours)
- 36 hours for band (assuming band practice is 3 times weekly for 4 weeks, week 5 is break)
- 280 hours in school (7am to 3pm)

That leaves you 139 hours to prepare for your Mastery Review 2. And that's after much concession. Think. 139 hours. Especially for Sec 3s. Taking 7-9 subject courses; furthermore you are in the transition period. Assuming the norm has an 8 subject course.

That leaves you 17 hours per subject for Sec 3s, 27 hours for Sec 2s and Sec 1s. That is not a lot. Seriously. If you decide to buck up now, there is still time.

Personally, those in 3-3 will know that I more or less screwed up for Mastery Review 1. So instead of crying over spilt milk, expecially when the results are out, then with the "emo" attitude, come band and don't perform well, what more should you do than buck up now and prepare for the battle? Our concert is 2 weeks after the Mastery Review 2. By the time, most of our results would be known. How do you want to feel?

Sec 4s, Prelim 1 is in June, but please, treasure your time. Its important ok? Make the band proud... break through the band's past O level records this year ok? Let the band be proud of you. We are behind you all the way. All the best hor...

And to all, a final note: Time is in your hands. You are the master of your future. There are obstacles looming ahead. Whether you want to achieve success is up to you. ALL THE BEST, AND START STUDYING NOW!!!

God Bless All of You.

What we should do now?

Today, was not a pleasant day. You know that as much as I do. Please guys, time is running out, yet our bands attendance is still like.........(you fill in the blanks). How do we expect to have high morale and good music making if the attendance is like.......... There are only two options in which we make Aesthetique 2008 a success.

Option 1: Have full band attendance
Option 2: Cut people.
The results?
Result 1: High Morale
Result 2: Not so High Morale

Mr Tan is kind with us. It is the fact. How are we gonna make good music with lousy band attendance. Please. If you are one of the absentees reading this post, do something about it. Come band!!! The essence of coming to band is that you get to perform. Fair enough. And less pumping....

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?> COME BAND NOW!!!

......*feeling sombre*......

Today is the 13th of March. The number 13 is known to be an unlucky number in the Chinese culture. So, technically today is suppose to be unlucky. And yes, if I ask some of you whether you think today was an unlucky day, you would strongly agree.

You might say that the fact that Springsfield found a stand outside band room and was angry with us was unlucky. You might say that the fact that Mr Tan decided to check the rhythm book today was unlucky, because you were unprepared. You might say that upsetting Il Shan today was unlucky, because there were some unknown factors or causes that made us screw up our pieces.

Well, yes, i agree, but to a certain extent.

What's interesting about all the things that happen to us today, is that they were all caused by us. What made Mr Tan, Il Shan, and all our leaders mad today was our attitude.

Indeed, I left early today, so you may say I have no right to post this as I wasn't there to feel the heat from the pumping and from Il Shan's scolding. BUT, let me tell you my feelings. I was really disappointed. Not at the band, but the way how things turned out today.

I came into the band room, feeling cheerful and excited about what Mr Tan is going to do. And I try my best to cooperate with the conductors and the leaders, by focusing. I was hoping that this practice would turn out great. I am sure a lot of you guys feel the same way as I do.

I realised i was terribly wrong when I saw Mr Tan's face when he is checking the rhythm book.

"Sigh" is one word I can use to describe my feelings for today's practice. Not "F**k" or "Wah lau".

Rhythm book was supposed to be done in the last two weeks if you haven't completed it. TWO WEEKS is a very long time! If you tell me you have not complete 21, it can at least be accepted because there were some misconception that 21 is not needed to be completed. However, the whole book!? What the hell are you doing in your life? Slacking? Playing? Mugging?!

Though the stand was not the main point of today's punishment, but stands have been disappearing. Take extra care of your stand please.

What made Il Shan upset today was certainly what you call "冤枉". We did poetic over and over again, and we screwed it up. There was no reason for us to screw up. And "Beauty and the Beast", we practised it during our sectionals didnt we? I don't know why it still sounds as if we were side-reading it for the first time...

However, all is not lost. Let me tell you something interesting. Our practice pattern goes like this. MON: Maybe good, maybe bad. THUR: Depends on MON, if leaders scold us, it will be good. If not, it will be bad. FRI: Good.

Suggestion: Why not we focus for every practice and let every practice be the best. In this way, Mr tan will be happy, our leaders will be happy, and we will also be happy.
One stone kill three birds, isn't tat good?, And all we have to do is to focus...and do what we are told to do. But if only one person does that, it will be useless. It will only work if everybody does it.

Final note: Though today was bad, let's put it aside. Let's embrace tomorrow's practice and wish it to be well.! =)

Two Statements.

It’s good to hear my band piece Threnody sounding better and better each time I come back to hear it. JiaYou! Or mebbe…’add oil’. DUN GO TO THE PETROL STATION PLEASE. :D

The main part of this post is to post two inspirational sentences I have heard over the past few weeks in my school and share them with you all. Do think about them and how they can help you perform better…

1. “The BEST piece of music in the world…is the one you’re currently facing now.” – Richard J. Adams, Head of Music, NAFA

The next one refers particularly to student conductors;

2. “I don’t conduct the front players. Yes I do give them eye contact but mainly I conduct the back seat players (ie those at the back row or at the corners of the band.) Why conduct the front players? They are probably good enough already; that’s why they’re in the front. So I conduct the weaker players…” – Volker Hartung, Orchestral conductor

Do give them some thought. Happy holidays…and happy practicing. :)

Full Speed Ahead!

OKAY PEOPLE!

I guess it's time I add in my 2 cents worth about how we're going.

The concert is on 17 May, that's like 2 months and 2 weeks away.
My look at it? WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME GUYS!

Let me assure you that being under Mr.Tan's baton means that we're in very safe hands. However, to make Aesthetique 08 not only impressive, but also extremely successful, we'll need to put in EXTRA EFFORT!

Yes! I am saying that it's time to pick up the pace and not turn back! We need to move at FULL SPEED AHEAD GUYS!

Here's our confirmed repertoire, and I'll tell you the most important aspects of these pieces so that you guys can have more direction when practicing.

POETIC INTERMEZZO: Intonation (as a person, section, band); Phrasing
THRENODY: Intonation; Phrasing
CARNIVAL OF ANIMALS: Articulation; Rhythm
PRELUDE & FUGUE: Phrasing; Baroque style
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: Intonation; Phrasing; Rhythm
PIRATES: Ariticulation; Rhythm

*Disclaimer: Notes should have all been settled by then

Okay, so there you have it. If you feel that there's too much to work on. GOOD! THAT'S STRESS FOR YOU! SO STOP SLACKING AND START WORKING! HARDER!

I feel (and I hope Il Shan doesn't see this) that we can't judge how much of a piece we've covered by percentage really. At the end of the day, whether it is 100% or 200%, we must present THE BEST OF THE MUSIC. And that's what the band is famous for - presenting the best.

So all, be prepared to work extra extra hard! We need to make Aesthetique 08 SUPER IMPRESSIVE! So that everyone will know that the band has made a SUPER IMPROVEMENT!

Cheerio
Daniel

"Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory." Ghandi

Let's add oil as the days pass by us.

OK, let's face the fact---the good, the bad and the ugly.

Good: YES! We are improving at a steady pace. Everyone said so, even the pessimistic concert master who has outrageous and yet somewhat justified high expectations for us. Our leaders said so. And if you still aren't convinced, Mr Tan, a professional, said so too.

Bad : O....Kay, so maybe we are not improving that fast. One can easily infer that from the fact that Threnody is still 0.5% done, Pirates only 1% done, and Carnival of animals is only 7% done. Remember guys: THE DUE DATE OF THE MASTERING OF YOUR NOTES IS THE MARCH HOLIDAYS!

Ugly : From my point of view, i have seen some really bad attitude from some of our fellow members. Sometimes, in Band, its not just all about music. There are times when people look at your attitude. And not just in band, but in Life too. Imagine this scenario: Your boss asked you to rush a project. You, being indifferent and nonchalant, brushes it away. When your boss questions about your bad attitude, you reply :" What!? Cannot is it?! YOU BUAY SONG fire me LA!" This is some of the attitudes I have observed from some of our sec 2s and 3s.

So, lets add oil! Aesthetique is just a few practices away from us. Its time we face the cruel facts. Yes, we are improving, but not fast enough!

So, the most logical thing to do is to buck up!

Lastly, let me quote a sentence from somebody (I forgot who is it):
"CHSSB has the potential to be a great band, but the problem is that they do not know how to maximise it."

Let's add oil as we get nearer to Aesthetique 2008!
