Resolutions

Hello.

I am here to talk about my new year resolutions. Like, most of the people around me, I don't usually have resolutions. However, this year, I do have a few.

My first new year resolution is to learn, perfect and master the art of typing in perfect English, and not in Singlish or net language. Like tis, or like tat. Yes, it may sound lame, but its my resolution, so it may sound a bit stupid to you.

My second new year resolution is to make all our band members come for band. I know its difficult, but I don't care. I just want them to come, so that they can indulge in the music-making merriment during our band practices, like what we are enjoying now. And also so that they won't screw our concert up. And also so that we won't get pumped.

My third resolution is the simplest yet. It is to make the people around me happy. Yes, a simple smile will do.

That's all that I have. I can't think of anymore right now.

So, please post in this blog. Please. And if you have any candid photos or pictures that you will like to post it on this blog, please feel free to do so. [Strictly no explicit content-at least not on this blog..]

That's all I have to say. Merry belated Christmas and a happy early new year.

PS: If there is any spelling errors, please feel free to correct me. I said "correct" not "insult", or "suan" me. Thanks.

Hang Siang. =)

Ten years on

Ten years ago, I was tricked into joining what was then Catholic High Military Band.

Ten years later, I can't imagine my life without the valuable skills, experiences and people I've met during my music journey.

To some of you, the word 'band' sounds like a curse, 'sectionals' feels like torture, and 'music' is the result of lots of screaming, push-ups, mind numbing theory and endless rehearsals to make sense of those  squiggly things called notes.

In the quest for the holy grail, do not forget that at the end of the day, we're all out to have fun and to learn something. Perhaps ten years later, you'd look back and remember the good old days.

Time for everything, no time for band.

I just organized a sectionals on 13th of December. And guess what, 2 out of 7 people came. So in the end what is the purpose of organizing so many sectionals? Then i ask u, how to improve my section when no one takes the initiative to practice and come for sectionals. Furthermore, those who do not turn up, always give the similar crap reasons.

  1. Tuition(like have tuition on each single day and each hour)
  2. Extremely busy(Dunno busy with wat, still got time to chat on MSN, play games etc.)
  3. Must study(ok, but in the last week of holiday:"Shit lah, now must chiong holiday homework liao)
  4. Dun feel like(den wat you feel like)
  5. Dunno there is sectionals(den wat do you know)

Conclusion: Everything got time, just no time for band.

Now I am really sick and tired of my section, but I cannot let the state of my section deteriorate. But who can tell me what can I do with my section.

Band Camp ' 07

Today is the last day of the band camp, and everyone is very excited. Throughout this camp, i personally learnt a lot of new things and i got to bond and know my juniors better. This camp also allowed me to know who have the potential to lead and get to observe how the sec1s and 2s can work together to solve a problem. For my group is quite good, it consists of jie xiang, hanley, tzung ern, norman, andrew and jun yao. They are all very energetic for all the activities and they are able to encourage and motivate each other well, which i was very happy about it. The leader of my group is jie xiang and i felt that he did quite a good job in coordinating the group and engaging the group in conversations. I also learnt that in order to let my juniors do what i wanted them to do, i need to 以身作则 , 做个好榜样 and by taking the responsibility to let them know what is right and what is wrong. I felt that overall my group had dong quite well in this camp and i hope that everyone who had gone to the camp had gone back learning something important of it.

Hello PPL! (Random Post)

Hi Guys! It has been such a long time since i posted something on our beloved band blog.

And well, i will just say what i feel.

For the last few weeks, you guys have shown improvement. I can hear it, trust me. I noe wad i hear. Everything of our music making is improving.

Of course, not to perfection! But, that is all in due course if we continue to move forward in the right direction, which is wad we r doin now!

And, our sec 1s are bucking up. Not particularly in their music-making, but in their attitude. Some of you may not see it, but i do. They are more hard-working, more disciplined during Band , and of course their tone and everything is improving. Again, not to perfection, but there is a stepping stone for everything, right?

And well, our attendance is improving (i dun mean anyone), because more ppl are enjoying band. Though certain sections may be weak in attendance, but we shouldn't jus blame the whole band of a bad attendance just because of that/those section/s. See it in general.

I agree that it partly our fault because of these sections.

SO, what i am saying is: we are improving in all the aspects of a professional band, not to perfection, but i can definitely see that we are moving somewhere in the correct direction.

SO, keep it up guys. We can do much better than this. =)

Good job to these people for coming down on a non-band day for self-practice/sectionals. So... Hope everyone will take the initative and effort and have the discipline to come down for self-practice!

An essay

Frankly, the blog seems rather dead, i am very postive that u guys have more to express. Anyway this is a essay that has relevance to music so i am going to post it up.

Children

I walked into the examination studio. Thoughts were running astray in my mind. I rubbed off the sweat on my palms against my pants. It was my music practical examination. I was taking the Grade 6 test. I took confident strides towards the piano. my heart was thumping at an incredibly fast rate. Although I was trying to portray the image of a candidate who was fearless of any challenges that lay ahead, deep down i was trembling with fear.

I started my piece entitled "Four Calling Birds". In terms of technical difficulties it was not fascinating. It did not require a virtuostic pianist but it required an instrumentalist who could feel and express what he had in mind. I had already told myself before i walked into the studio that I must not be frantic or flustered. I had to let the music flow.

I discarded all the pressure that was mounting in me. I imagined a beautiful picture in my mind. It was a portrait of a group of children. 'Magnificent' would be a word suitable to describe the artwork yet the only pity was that it was not coloured. My task was to use the enchanting piece I was playing to paint the adorable and innocent toddlers.

On the canvas, the radiant smiles on the faces of the children emitted happiness. They were dancing joyfully in the dense forest. They embraced nature, enjoying their lives to the fullest. The mere sight of these children would be alluring to anyone.

At the beginning of time, when God created Adam and Eve, he made sure they were perfect, creating them in the likeness on himself. He wanted us to be pure, ignorant and clueless about sins. That was how my portrait of music should be painted. I played every chord delicately to ensure that it was consonant. The sound that i produced was as graceful and elegant the way the children danced in the portrait. Their poise and every action teemed with sweetness and serenity. The children were flawless exactly the way God had wanted it to be.

I was like a master painter perhaps the famous renaissance artist, Michelangelo. I wanted to create a masterpiece comparable to the Sistine Chapel. Perfection was what I hoped to achieve. I played the melody which resembled the call of birds. It was like painting all the little canaries flitting above the heads of the children. Their chirping were lyrical and mesmerising. They were flying in tandem with the children's movement. Though the children were only toddler, they danced like excellent ballerinas. The children followed the gentle, meandering, lyrical lines of the chirping. My heart started to calm down, their sheer beauty had made me forget that i was at an examination.

I controlled my touch perfectly. The outcome up till then was to my desire expectation. Every tonal shade of colour i used to paint the children was fabulous. The hues matched consummately. Crimson sunset as backdrop. Trees with mahogany trunks. Children dressed in bright turquoise, orange and yellow radiating blissfulness. It was absolutely the way i wanted the sound to be. Music that exude beauty beyond the description of words.

The air-conditioner let out a soft groan. The sound reverberated against the four walls of the room. My pride swelled at that moment, due to the excellent performance that I was doing. I lifted my head and for that split second I lost focus.

I did not notice it but my finger was placed on the wrong key. After I pressed it, the sound was jarring. The dissonance of the destroyed the tranquility and balance. The vivacious picture had turned into a dull one. My picture was ruined. It was like landing a stroke of awlful dark navy blue onto the scarlet skies. It was like turning a sweet dream into a horrifying nightmare.

As the phrase ended, i took a deep breath. I needed a solution terribly quickly. The painting that had originally been described as fantastic only had one suitable word for it then. Devastating. As I search frantically for an answer, a few words came to my mind.

Music is spontaneous, react to the situation

These words made me continue the music. I followed my heart and expressed my feelings. I wanted the remaining of the music to be performed to perfection. I was like an elite painter adding tonal shades of red to let the dark gloomy skies regain the authentic crimson glow. The original peacefulness and azure feel was once again achieved.

I ended the piece by playing the last note subtly. After the echoes of the last note died down I looked towards the examiner.

He smiled.

Is Band Really That Difficult?

The holiday practices are almost over. They don't seem very productive to me for very specific reasons but anyway I managed to learn a few lessons. Once again its my usual, boring worries pertaining to the band I'm going to blog about. Those who read, please reflect.

Holiday practices expose to us how disunited CHSSB is at times as we have to deal with lousy, unacceptable attendance. You simply refuse to come for band and switch off your handphones. Perhaps to you band rehearsals may seem boring. Perhaps band rehearsals to you seem like a total waste of time. Well I'm telling you that its never easy to get a slot with a master conductor - you don't even realise the trouble the teachers have gone through to plan rehearsals! You simply skip band and when you get reprimanded you act as if nothing has happened.

I dare you to pick up the baton and conduct the band when HALF the members are gone, vanished, disappeared without a reason. I dare you to ask for balance and blend when you have HALF the trombone section missing. And what can conductors do? Scold? If you scold you wouldn't be able to make music. People with slightly immature minds will refuse to cooperate. And I am not speaking this for myself, rather on Mr Tan's behalf. Conducting a band that doesn't even bother about full attendence, is bullshit.

From today onwards, those that frequently "pon" band will stop "ponning". Twist this rule, and you will hate me forever.

The Other Milestone

Well said Il Shan. Next up is some regulations from ABRSM:
  • Candidates may use their discretion regarding indications or markings (particularly editorial) in the music – e.g. metronome marks, fingering, bowing, phrasing, the interpretation of ornaments, etc. – which need not be strictly observed. Where no such indications are present in the music, candidates should use their discretion to achieve a musical performance.
  • Candidates may not bring any unauthorized material or equipment into the examination room, and all mobile phones/pagers etc. must be switched off. Any candidate infringing this rule may be disqualified.
  • In the Practical grade examinations, out of a possible 150 marks, 100 are required to achieve a Pass, 120 to pass with Merit, and 130 for Distinction

And I think I read somewhere that "Remember, the examiner looks forward to listening to you" or something. Yeah. So RELAX. And "smile when you enter the room. This will boost your confidence during the examination". Think I forgot where it is, so can't copy and paste from the website.

Most essentially, REMEMBER TO BRING ALL YOUR ORIGINAL SCORES!

Good luck, god bless.

The Next Milestone

ABRSM is around the corner and I'm sure every fibre of your body has stiffened as you feel the heat of the exam. Do not compare and compete for it is immature behaviour - remember that this is your personal attainment and nobody else's.

Walk into the room with undenied confidence. Remember that the examiner has only one wish - to hear wonderful music and reward your efforts handsomely. Play with expression, nervousness is not in question anymore. Should you fumble, move along as if nothing has happened. Impress the examiner. Remember that this is YOUR exam.

Just three brief statements to summarize the possible outcomes.

To those who conveniently dropped the exam and took the easy way out, if you feel no shame you are being heartless towards yourself.

To those who may obtain godly marks, you will pledge not to become complacent and instead have an even greater hunger for excellence.

To those who may fail to obtain desirable grades, you will tell yourself that all is not lost and that your musical venture does not terminate at this minor defeat.

It's time to put on display your months worth of effort. Give it your best and the examiner will not hesitate to show you the fruit of your labour.

WHAT YOU'RE GONNA BE TESTED FOR AURAL

Hi guys! I understand that most of you are unsure about what would be tested for the aural ABRSM. So here's what it is. If you are unclear, you could approach me, Justin or Joel Tan.

Aural Tests: Grade 3

A To tap the pulse of a passage of music in 2 (including 6/8), 3 (including 9/8) or 4 time played by the examiner. The examiner will commence playing the passage, and the candidate will be expected to join in as soon as possible by tapping the beat, stressing where the strong beat falls. The candidate will then be asked to state the time.

B To sing, as an echo, three short phrases limited to a range of one octave in a major or minor key played by the examiner. The echoes should follow each phrase in strict time without an intervening pause. The key-chord and tonic will first be sounded and the pulse indicated.

C To recognize a rhythmic or melodic change to a four-bar phrase in a major or minor key played twice by the examiner, with the change being made in the second playing. Candidates will be required to recognize and tap, sing or describe the change. The key-chord and tonic will first be sounded and the pulse indicated. The examiner will be prepared to play both versions of the phrase a second time if necessary.

D To identify certain features of a piece played by the examiner. The features will be confined to contrasted dynamics (p/f), gradation of tone (crescendo/diminuendo), articulation (staccato/ legato), recognition of tempo changes (rallentando/accelerando etc.), and recognition of major and minor tonality, of which the examiner will select one or two and advise the candidate accordingly before playing the piece. Questions on the selected features will then follow. Candidates are encouraged to use Italian terms in their answers where appropriate.

Aural Tests: Grade 4

A To sing or play from memory a four-bar melody played twice by the examiner. The key-chord and starting note will first be sounded and named, and the pulse indicated. A second attempt will be allowed if necessary.

B To sing five notes from score in free time within the range of a third above and below the tonic in the key of C, F or G major. The test will begin and end on the tonic and will not contain any intervals greater than a third. The examiner will play and name the key-chord and tonic, and, if necessary, play each note after it has been attempted. Candidates may choose to sing the test from the treble or bass clef.

C1 To identify certain features of a piece played by the examiner. The features will be confined to dynamics (p/f), gradation of tone (crescendo/diminuendo), articulation (staccato/legato), tempo changes (rallentando/accelerando etc.), recognition of major and minor tonality, and general perception of the character of the piece, of which the examiner will select one or two and advise the candidate accordingly before playing the piece. Questions on the selected features will then follow. Candidates are encouraged to use Italian terms in their answers where appropriate.

C2 To clap the rhythm of a short extract played twice by the examiner from the above piece and state whether it is in 2, 3 or 4 time.

Aural Tests: Grade 5

A To sing or play from memory a short melody played twice by the examiner. The key-chord and starting note will first be sounded and named, and the pulse indicated. A second attempt will be allowed if necessary.

B To sing six notes from score in free time within the range of a fifth above and a fourth below the tonic in any major key up to two sharps or flats. The test will begin and end on the tonic and will not contain any intervals greater than a third, except for the rising fourth from dominant to tonic. The examiner will play and name the key-chord and tonic, and, if necessary, play each note after it has been attempted. Candidates may choose to sing the test from the treble or bass clef.

C1 To identify certain features of a piece played by the examiner. The features will be confined to dynamics (p/f), gradation of tone (crescendo/diminuendo), articulation (staccato/legato), tempo changes (rallentando/accelerando etc.), recognition of major and minor tonality, and general perception of texture, rhythm, form, style and period, of which the examiner will select one or two and advise the candidate accordingly before playing the piece. Questions on the selected features will then follow. Candidates are encouraged to use Italian terms in their answers where appropriate.

C2 To clap the rhythm of a short extract played twice by the examiner from the above piece and state whether it is in 2, 3 or 4 time.

By the way, I'll be in the band room on Friday after the celebrations. So if anyone needs help with the exam, I'll be there to help you.

Cheers,
Daniel

I just CANNOT let go of band!

It is 2 days after the Passing out Parade. I came upon the post by Yue Sheng in our band blog and I realized I just can’t let go of band! This post shall be my “last words” for you guys in band so I can rest in peace. (The pop “sharing” session is just too short for me to tell you all important things!!)

The 1 ½ year as a leader in band is the most meaningful and enjoyable time in my life. Whenever there were proposals or planning to do, the other leaders and I would always stay until very late to discuss. I can still remember the day I got the Drum Major post. It was my birthday. The very moment we were given our posts, we had tasks to do. We stayed back late to discuss about them. But we never get anything out of it. During meetings, as mentioned by Yue Sheng, I am always the stubborn one, Timothy and Eric the clever ones, Yue Sheng the one who wastes time and Yun Song the one that stops him. It was taxing but it was worth the efforts when the proposals that we planned worked out fine.

Life is so fun in band. I got to know many friends in band. We have been through so much together that we have a very strong bond between each other. It’s safe to say that if anyone of us were to have difficulties in any thing, even outside of band, the rest of us would sure help him out. In the preparation of SYF this year, I could see that happening - all of us had been through the exhausting 8 – 10 hours of practice, woke up at 4 a.m. every Saturday to practice for SYF and pulled through the taxing 8 – 10 hours of practice that followed, came back every day in the March Holidays, been through the daily morning practices, and many other extraordinary feats. We did all these TOGETHER. We sacrificed for one and other. We stood side by side when faced with a challenge. We encouraged and spurred each other on when some of us felt like surrendering. None of us had forsaken each other. Therefore, we are more than just friends, classmates and schoolmates; we are brothers.

Band impacted my life the most. It inspired me. It shows me that I am capable of so much more in life. Whenever I felt like giving up, I would look back at the times I spent together with my other brothers in band. The fact that we had conquered so much seemingly impossible obstacles shows that there is nothing in the whole word that we cannot solve. As long as we believe in ourselves and put in the extra efforts, nothing can bring us down.

However, I felt the real spirit of the CHSSB disappearing. Our fraternal bonds have weakened. Our zest in our music has diminished. We are losing our faith in music. We no longer have the stamina to “tahan” the pain of practicing and put in the hard work into our music. We complain at the slightest pain. Why have we changed so much after the silver? What happened to the ruggedness and the love for music that we possessed back then when we were preparing for our SYF? Are we no longer brothers?

I urge all of you out there not to forget the days we been through together. We had sacrificed so much for the band; we MUST NOT forsake each other now! We shall put in the extra efforts now to truly get up on our feet and look ahead. Believe in yourselves that you are capable of much more when you face any form of challenges. Stare the challenges in the face and never let it defeat you! 咬紧牙关地度过那些挑战! Believe me you will come out of it a better man!

Nonetheless, I truly enjoyed my 4 years together with you, brothers. I hope I have left a legacy behind for you guys. The story of CHSSB will now be passed on from us, the sec 4s, to you guys. Do write another wonderful and captivating chapter from where we had stopped!

POP is finally over...

Hi GUYS!

So, finally POP is over, and the Sec 4s have left after they had put in so much effort in CHSSB. So much that we don't even know 70% of the hard work they had put in! (ok...maybe not 70%, er, 50%?)

Ok whatever.

Firstly, i would like to say GOOB JOB GUYS! WE made the sec 4s proud of us. And now, WE r the CHSSB. Yep, us, the sec1s, 2s and the 3s.

Secondly, like what Mr heng said, we have grown so much. The CHSSB has matured a lot from what i have observed. And the sec 1s are bucking up, which is good!

Thirdly, if any sec 4s are reading this RIGHT NOW, then i would like to say a big thank you, for giving so much to the Band, both time and effort. And congrats to the sec 4s too, you all have become the alumnis of CHSSB from the time the POP ceremony ended.

To u all, the sec4s, leaving CHSSB ,maybe a painful thing. But look on the bright side, you can always come down. And also, we will always remember you...

*SIGHS* So, now the sec 4s are gone. And we have got to depend on ourselves now.

But so what? We WILL do it.

Right?

PS: Erm, for the "we will always remember you" part, i dun wan to use "you will always be in our hearts", cos its too mushy, and it sounds like you all are dying. Ok? Erm, just so you all know lah...

Clinic by Boston Brass (courtesy of Gary Chew)

I'm just going to say that this is an extremely rare opportunity. If you ask Daniel (lim), he'd agree that such fine stuff can only be found at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Now you're having it here in Singapore.

Basically this clinic, as with all other clinics, takes your learning of the instrument to an advanced level. Some good inspiration for you, especially Sec 1s, to fine tune your playing skills. Also, S$10.00 is
an extremely reasonable price for a clinic held by Boston Brass.

Therefore all you brass players are encouraged to attend this clinic. In fact I'd say its mandatory. So all you brass players keep this special Saturday free. Payment will be settled as the event draws close.

There's No Place I'd Rather Be

Poignant Lyrics, Simple yet Evocative Melody and Accompaniment...
BRILLIANT SONG!

The First and the Last blog

This blog was i guess specially done to remind me of the beautiful things that had happen during my 2 years or perhaps 1 1/2 years of leadership. I was tidying the file that i was going to pass to daniel and i sort of looked through all of the documents. There was this particular document that i came acrossed, it was all the certificates of the 2005 batch. The certificates done by me. As i scrolled down the 28 or so names, each name greeted me with much familiarity. Lessons learnt from them were invaluable. There were just so much things that happened in this two mere years. I still remember the walking on the roof incident. How clumsy was i then, to dare to walk on the roof! Thank goodness i was fine. Exco meetings to discuss the camps, problems that the band had, etc, it was great i guess. The five of us truely have grown in this 2 years, we were sort of the best team? At every meeting, en hao would always be very stubborn and stick with his plan, I would always be digressing into something unimportant, Eric and timothy would always be the 2 that came out with the better ideas, yunsong was incharge of stopping me from digressing and convincing enhao that the second plan is feasible. Each meeting we stayed till wee hours of the night, en hao even sacrificed his birthday celebration just to stay back to discuss about the proposals. For my batch, we were always there for each other, win together lose together. A team in other words, sec 3s, it's a short amount of 2 days aways from pop. But perhaps after the pop you'll see a clearer picture of what does it mean to be the leading batch. I didn't really understand it at first, but when i was sitting on the sofa after band practice during last years holidays, tzung siang came. He asked why did i looked so stressed, then he just said during this term of leadership what matters is to have fun. Have Fun. Just 2 words but it changed the 1 1/2 years left in band totally. When we plan things as a batch we truely enjoyed it, there was no solowork, everyone contributed. We sneaked back to school during public hoidays to rush things out such as sec 1 orientation boards. It was totally fun, getting into the school through other means as the gate was locked. Many things happened this year and I guess the thing that will always be etched in my heart would be this year's syf. It was a silver, but i don't want anyone to put that as a past. Everyone would remember the practices we had. Edison playing the whip with all that he got, joshua having to go to syf playing a timpani solo when he is only a sec 2. The camps at the beach where we played before a real sunrise. Yes, those hardwork, some of you said that it was unfair, but calm down look at the situation, it is fair i guess. The silver was a excellent reminder that having hardwork was not enough. The Gold with Honours required knowledge of music, it required every player to be clear about what they are playing, how in tune are they, this are all being done through practice. Something not achieved through a mere tuner. We all wept for the silver, we wanted more, yes, of course, we are the catholic high symphony band, we never stopped moving on. Our band has a mindset of excellence, the mindset of striving to be the best and i really hope that from now on during every practice have the attitude that you all were having before. Ever since we left and taking example from the recent esplanade concert, everything was sloppy and slow. Perhaps you all changed but your inate characteristic will always remain there. Let me call you to think of time when you joined band, writing Syphony Band as your first choice for your cca, you were thinking of the pieces you've heard for orientation and i'm sure the inner you was thinking about making music. Why did we add on for the love of music to our three phrase motto: One Band One Sound One Brotherhood? It is because we are one due to music. Everytime each one of you said that we made music, it is actually the time when each of your inate ability showed. Everyone was happy after each performance because everytime we played, our hearts connected, we all had fun at a higher intellectual level. It was like playing a teamsport. Now i would like to ask all of you to remember about me talking about interacting with each other through music and of course the importance in knowledge of music. If all of you are not going to learn how to blend and going right down to the fundamentals the band will never improve, there's no point in aiming at high level technicaility pieces. Train yourselves up, if the basics are not there, it will be hard to improve. But i have to say, thank you for the music, on Limelight at esplanade. It was a very good closure for the four years in band. Remembering time when we had just taken over, all of you were very sloppy, most of you couldn't manage with the physical training. Well, it's time to toughened ourselves up isn't it? The rugged gentlemen poster isn't made just for fun. I have to say it, if you are going to complain to your parents now about it. Yes, you may get to relax and not do any exercise, but eventually we will all have to go JC. For the first 3 months you will be representing your school. Would you want to be regarded for someone who can't do basic PT?If all of you have the mindset of excellence in music, wanting to achieve more, then have it too in sports! I have no idea why did i start to write this blog but there was simply gush feeling to blog. Perhaps it was to tell all of you that my batch really enjoyed our time at band for the whole 4 years. I hoped that each and everyone of you band members will really enjoy it too. Win Together, Lose Together, we are One Band One Sound One Brotherhood. Our camaraderie and sense of esprit de core will always be our source for our excellent rapport on stage. So all of build you physicality and technicaility and play music so good that you can do it over a million times. Time and tide waits for no man and band, we sec 4s are officially leaving the band and soon the school. So thank you once again it was a pleasure leading you guys and do not only the band proud but also the school proud. It seems that 4 years in band is coming to an end and indeed it is a fruitful end.

Hairspray

19 years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway production Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

A New Chapter Unfolds

So all of you had your fun that night. That rapturous performance with the most overwhelming response from our audience. That was enough. Time to look forward and constantly remind ourselves not to fall into the reaching hands of complacency. You all know deep down that we're not good enough.

Long story short.
A series of hurdles have been laid neatly before us :
1) POP - if you know what that means
2) ABRSM
3) Sec 1 Orientation 2008
4) Aesthetique 2008

These are some of the major events following our life as CHSSB members.
Our current standard will not last us for long.

Some of the pieces in mind for next year :
1) Pomp & Circumstance - Grade 5
2) Overture to Candide - Grade 5
3) Noah's Ark - Grade 5.5
4) Jericho - Grade 4

Will probably pick only 2 out of 4.
Prepare yourselves mentally. Practices immediately after concerts are never meant to be slack.
Preparations for Aesthetique 2008 will start after ABRSM.

Remember the consistency of purpose each and every one of you will have in mind.
For that reason, CHSSB should and will bear a top band standard from today onwards.

Good Job GUYS!

7/8/2007------>the MOST memorable day of my life...

All that I would like to say is CONGRATS to every single one of you.
Yup, you did it.
We all did it.
WE made the performance A great fanfare for the SECS 4!

WE made the audience OPEN THEIR MOUTH IN AWE when we played INCANTATION & DANCE.

WE made the audience CRY when we played AMERICAN ELERGY(ok...maybe some of them).

WE made the audience GO WILD & SCREAM wen we played ABBA GOLD.

Yes, although it wasn't our best performance, but we all enjoyed our selves didn't we?

Who cares bout SYF? Who cares if we got silver? WHO CARES? You noe wad?
WADS most important is that we MANAGED to stand up on our feet after we have fallen so badly!

The most difficult times in life are when we fall, and try to stand up again. BUT we did it. We stood up, ever more with pride that WE ARE THE CHSSB

Like the teachers said, lets not get complacent, lets work together and acheive greater heights.

YES, lets do it TOGETHER!

Hey

HIHI. this is my 1st time blogging EVER, yay (if u consider this blogging)

Okay now, how would all of you like to improve? even with the help of your tutors and teachers and with the sectionals and combines, it still isn't easy to play it right...
As someone said before, if im not wrong Mr Heng, making music is painting a big picture.
the combines and tutorials only help to work on the little details and finishing touches, but what can it do if the colours on the pallet are not good or not even there at all?!

So to form the basis of the brilliant colours to be used on the painter's pallet, you 1st have to hone yourself to become the rightful colour that is needed. To achieve this, you can do one simple thing, which is to SELF PRACTICE !!!

Sectionals, tutorials and combines help the whole body, section or band, but we 1st need to upgrade ourselves in order for people to help upgrade us as a whole, so please do SELF PRACTICE !!!

the esplanade concert is on tuesday, which im sure its too late for you to start self practicing, but we have other concerts and the SYF 2 years down to look forward to, so , you can help the band by SELF PRACTICING (pardon the practicing spelling errors)

Thanks and lets do well together okay? God bless...

One Week + 2 Days Left

One week and two days left to Esplanade Limelight Concert. Time really flies eh?

According to Benjamin, attendance has been good. Yay! But come to think of it, why does the attendance improve when the concert is around the corner? Hmm...

And, most importantly, PUSH TICKET SALES! You can ask your friends to refer to this website for booking of tickets or information about the concert: Sistic: Event Details.

Around One More Week

Hi everyone!

As the title suggests, there's only about one week to the Esplanade Concert. One week = 7 days = 3 practices. Is that sufficient? No, unfortunately.

- Choreography not done
- Pieces not polished

So many things to do. So please buck up, people, and ask your dear fellow band members to attend band. And, for those who attends band practice, FOCUS.

That's all. Hope everyone looks forward to our annual concert, and of course, work hard for it.

Hi people, just wanna say something i haven't tried to say for a long time.

Out of pure randomness (don't mind me), Thank you for the music is not a melancholic piece.
It is not about departing and sorrow, but happiness and gratitude.

Watch this:

So please phrase it appropriately in a totally new and different light the next time you play it, even though if the tempo goes really really s l o w at times ..

Okay bye, hope to see some posts soon.

"Famous" sayings/mottos in cat high

"D.W.I.T: Do Whatever It Takes"
"We aim to Impress" by Mr Lee HB our Principal.

"Impossible is nothing"
"Touch your heart" by Mr Goh YH.

From these, i would like everyone to reflect. Take a moment to ponder upon such question like:
1) Have I done enough for myself in band?
2) Is this the standard I want?
3) Why do I play music in band for, what is my Aim/Goal/Arrival point?
4) What do I want to leave behind at the end of my years in band?

and finally,
"ONE BAND, ONE SOUND, ONE BROTHERHOOD"
cheers, people =)

The Magic Of A Good Band Rehearsal

Okay first and foremost, hello. It's my first time blogging.

I'm here just to touch on a very perplexing problem CHSSB is having now --- unfruitful rehearsals that make band practices seem like a total waste of time. What's even worse is that we have a prestigious concert for us not very distant, and this problem here is seriously getting in the way. It's time we did something.

I'm sure every, if not most of you CHSSB musicians are listening to professional recordings of classical music from time to time. Sure the music from your MP3/MP4/ipod whatever sounds extremely pleasing to the ears, they ARE professionals musicians after all. However something is always not understood. How do they produce such beautiful music? Apart from the individual techniques that each and every player has, something else fills that gap, something that we sorely lack.

And now I make my point about having efficient band rehearsals. Even if a band has star players with unparalleled skills, should they fail to work out efficient rehearsals they would meet their own demise. Period. Good band rehersals do work wonders, and is probably the only solution we have now since we're all not professional players, with Sec 1s still learning on their instrument and stuff.

Okay first you would ask yourself if band is or is allowed to be a slack CCA. Then you would look at the sports CCA members, panting their way home after an entire day's training. They're tired..... but what about CHSSB members? The truth is, each and every musician is always dead-tired after a rehearsal, professionals not excluded. So if the sports CCA and even professionals are drained of their energy after training / rehersal, why aren't we? Don't tell me it's because band is not a career to you or is a pathetic CCA. Musicians who give their full best during rehearsals will be tired after that. The Sec 3s have first hand experience.

If we reflect back on the past rehearsals we had, nobody is going to say that they were fruitful. We see some of you slouching totally while playing your instrument. This is not our idea of Professionalism --- and this is not the way to put up an extraordinary concert at the esplanade. In fact, all this imperfections during rehearsals only serve to degrade the reputation of CHSSB. I surely do not want my friends to condemn CHSSB as "a slack CCA".

So basically I'm appealing to those of you who are still lurking in your own fantasies. Band rehearsals are important. The least thing you could do during these rehearsals is to give your fullest attention and focus towards the conductor and the music. You should also have all scores being rehearsed taken OUT of their slides so that you may pen down what the conductor says. It is important to remember what is being said so that we don't rehearse the same thing over and over again to no avail. And finally SIT ---- UP ---- STRAIGHT while playing. I'm assuming you all understood, so any violations will be dealt with seriously. (not by me of course)

So those of you who are still taking band as a casual CCA I hope you snap yourself back into reality. We have a concert not far away waiting for us to give our best at. I'm sure every one of you would want to have a great time and bask in the warm applause and adulation of our fans / audience. So think about it, the professional recording behind your MP3 screen doesn't come for granted, rather, the results of the musician's undivided focus. One day we'll record ourselves with a decent recorder and compare it with the the professional. You'll see what I mean.

Work hard and don't let each other down... For the common good that is Music.

Belated Entry for the New Term

Hi everyone. As the title suggests, this post shall be my personal Term 3 Resolution for the band (a belated one, of course). Hope everyone enjoyed their term 2 June holidays (I don't think the sec3s really enjoyed their holidays. Haha), learnt a lot through the band concerts we had, and also caught up with fun and work.

The next project we will be having is the upcoming CHS Homecoming Day 2007, 30th June. We'll be setting up our own CHSSB stall, selling unwanted merchandise (but in good quality) and also tickets of our concert. Hope everyone will give their best in publicising our stall (especially for the tickets), although this event isn't really that major, compared to our concerts. And of course, earn as much money as possible :)

Now for the real resolution for term 3: In general, I hope to see the band improve (that goes without saying) in terms of attitude, tone and technique, discipline and inter-relationship (relationship among one another).

Personally, I wish to instil passion for music to each and everyone of us. Instead of coming for band rehearsals because of the fact that it is compulsory or because you're scared that your senior would come hunting for you, I hope that every member comes to band because you want to make music, and to enjoy music. Of course, facing the facts, harsh (or sadistic) disciplining works sometimes, but is there really a need to undergo such discipline in order to come to band (which is like... so basic), or to pay attention to Ms Tan? Well, I don't think so... So please, understand what I'm talking about (since I can't force you to have the passion overnight). LOVE MUSIC.

Needless to say, for tone and technique, which the seniors had been harping on for years, is the most crucial point to a better band. Basically, just PRACTISE! You can always approach your senior or tutor for advice on practising smart and help in improving on your personal technique. Hopefully we'll be able to at least attain a band that plays in-tune and be balanced.

Last but not least, we hope to see the motto of our band ONE BAND ONE SOUND ONE BROTHERHOOD, being realised. One brotherhood: Help one another out, know one another better, know your section well, know your band well. The sec3s might organise a band camp soon?

So I suppose that's all for my part. Hope to see more people blog (see? "One Brotherhood". Share your feelings and thoughts, just don't make any controversial comments).

WORK HARD EVERYONE!

And PLEASE. Use your real name...

The Homecuming Event

Hi, this my first time blogging here. I'm sure u all know who i am so i do not need to introduce myself. The annual homecuming day is coming again, and we can use this day to earn some money for the band. We really need to be more enthu on that day so more people will come to buy our stuff. So please all of u bring down all ur usable stuff and contribute to the band and work together to make this sale a success. Moreover, this is a time of bonding where we will be able to see different people cooperating with each other doing things. So, all the Sec1s please use this day to get along with the other members of the band and strengthen ur bonds between each and every member. I also experienced this before when i was in Sec1 and2, my class was involved in the homecuming activities and for both years we got the drinks stall. I saw many heart-warming scenes happening among my classmates eg. people trying all ways to maintain the supply of drinks when the stock almost runs out. And others carrying drinks around to sell in order to increase our profits to help our class. So if we could make a lot of money on Saturday, we could be able to use it for oversea tours or band outings etc. So let's do our every way to contribute to the band. I hope to see this teamwork and cooperativeness in the band not only for the Sec3s but for every level.

Today's De-Brief [June 25th]

Hi again! I m sure u noe hu i m by now...
Erm, i feel like toking bout today's de-brief. As u all noe, today, Springsfield told us bout the day wen we took the swedish ppl out. He feels that its not our fault that we made the sweden wait for so long at RELC ( its spelled correctly rite?), and its b cos of the lack of planning. He oso said that our movement was very slow.
Well, actually, i AGREE wif everything that springsfield had said. Er...except for the part wen he said its the sec 3s fault.

For one thing, its true that our movement is slow, no matter if its sec 1s or 2s (in general i mean). We were late when we meet at the bishan MRT station. mayb its b cos of the insufficient time for lunch, but i still think we can at least show up 2-4 mins late, and not 10-15 mins LATE!!! Thats really slopy...

Another thing is that we let the swedish ppl wait for half an hour. Like what MR tey had said, the swedish had already waited a lot wen they arrive in S'pore. So, we shudnt let them wait again. How wuld YOU feel, if YOU fly 12 hrs to sweden and was held up so many times? U will oso feel "buay song" rite? Fortunatelym the swedish were nice ppl, they didnt even complain wen we took them out.

Again, it was b cos of us. Our slow movement, and mayb the lack of planning.

Lastly, Springsfield said that its not out fault, its the lack of planning by the Sec 3s. Well, i dunno bout u, but i dun feel that way. Every1 has a part to play in this. Just b cos it didnt went quite smoothly, that doesnt mean that we shud push everything to the sec3s! The sec 3s did almost all the admin stuff! They r the ones who planned all the barbeque, the trip, and even the concert! However smoothly or badly everything goes, the sec 3s still put in A LOT OF EFFORT to make all these happen!

So y not we giv the sec 3s a round of applause??? *WOOTS* *CHEERS* !!!!
Ok nvm tat was lame...

Ok this look quite long, but nvr mind. I m not sure whether the sec 1s not bout this, but during the SYF period, our movement was like, ten times faster than the our movement speed now! We can set up everything in the hall in a short time!

So What happen to all the energy and the enthusiam?
Like i hav said, We hav done it b4 and we can do it again!
Hi people,

(i'll promise i'll make this short, not like the blog entries in my own blog, haha)

indeed, we all had a great time during the exchange with the sweden people. we learnt alot, too. well, we learned to be better hosts, better people, and more gracious ones too(for the ones that got their family fortune all dug out). and i've conquered my fear of going out with a huge group of females! yay.

i've heard from many fellow band members that they are all starting to miss our swedish friends already. compared to the first day when we saw them, i'm sure we've developed some sort of friendship with them throughout the three days, ya? yet another lesson learnt by all of us - to cherish. Things will not be there forever, People will not wait for you, and opportunities don't always come knocking on our door.

Speaking of opportunities, our very own esplanade concert is coming right up, after a few weeks' time. To me, it came at a great time, really. We can make use of this opportunity to show the world (or at least, singaporeans) what CHSSB is made of. we might not be the best band in the world, but i'm sure our passion for music does not lose out to other musicians in the world. So let's prove that we love music, and by giving it the best we can in this performance, we give full respect to our almighty MUSIC. So start your countdowns and start practising smart.

Yeah, short and sweet, i hope you guys understand what i'm talking about. =)

Good luck for term 3.

i'm not sure of the spelling but thats how you can pronounce it, its GoodBye in Swedish.

Next Up: Esplanade's LimeLight!

Now that the Sweden band exchange is officially over, we can fully concentrate on our next upcoming concert. (Wait for it...)*drumroll*, the Esplanade's LimeLight!!!

For this concert, we, as a Band, have to work extra hard! Becos this concert features us, and ONLY us!!! That's y its called limelight. According to the leaflet, only a few bands and choirs, that are the cream of the crop in Singapore, are invited to perform!!! Many ppl from other bands will b there.

Now is the time for us to really to practice hard for this performance.

Forget about the "tragedy*" in April, let it all go away.

Now we must focus and play our best.

The last two concert have been great!!! And i think that we seriously can do better.

So why not we show everyone that CHSSB can "kick ass"!!? We have done it b4, n we can do it again

Let's show them what we r made of!!

Sweden Exchange: Officially over

YES! Finally one person blogged, keep it up...

And I've just witnessed the end of our exchange with the Swedish - Their departure from S'pore Changi Airport. Springsfield, Jun Wei, Benjamin, Mr Tey and I were all there. Here are the photos that Benjamin took:

Yep. And I suppose that's about it, and Springsfield collected many contacts from the Swedish and the Russian, ask from him if you intend to keep in touch with the Swedish.

Hey Guys!!!

Hi!! Now that Band Web is OFFICIALLY up, please try to post as many things as u wan! For example, ur reflections, ur thoughts, or even shout outs!!!
Well, i feel that the concert yesterday was a successful one.
Its the FIRST time the band has ever performed without the sec 4s, and we managed to (quote from MR heng) " stand on our feet! I think tats the first step we shud take to reach our goal of being a good band, and we achieved it! *woots!*
We also had a smooth exchange with the swedish band, which is goodm considering that there is a lot of miscommunication.
Lastly, i like to thank the sec 3s and the teachers-in-charge, and also ms tan fer making all of these happen. the sec 3s have went thru a lot for this exchange with the sweden band, not to mention the TICS and ms tan.
Also, for those who helped, a big thank you to all!
The next concert is at the esplanade, so i hope it will b another enriching and successful concerT!

The Band Web is up

Hi everyone.

Great concert last night. Many people turned up, we had many photos with the Swedish and had a 1/11 standing ovation. I hope that this concert can allow our new sec1s to be more confident during concerts and also be a memorable one for all of us. I think that the trumpets improved quite a bit, to think that they can finally play the trumpet parts for "At the end of the day" for the previous few rehearsals. Good job people! And... Also a great effort by Springsfield for being the emcee.

Oh, and if any of you didn't read the notice I wrote on the whiteboard in band room, if you intend to be one of the contributors (i.e have a "share" in writing), please email to me, here. Thanks.

And, hope everyone works hard and looks forward to the Esplanade concert. I really really hope it's a successful one... Like what Ms Tan suggests, we can have a piece "choreographed" with light sticks. Please, if anyone out there has any idea on such "choreography", inform the sec3s, we would LOVE to hear some ideas from the lower sec.

Anyway, as the title suggests, the band web's sort of up. Some links are still broken, so bear with me for a while...

Bye...

Outing with Swedish band: reflections

Alright. So I guessed everyone enjoyed their time at Kovan Melody yesterday, playing basketball, playing tennis and badminton, swimming and splashing water on innocent people and making them wet...

Ultimately, the aim of this BBQ and outing is to let the CHSSB have a day allocated to interact with the Swedish and to know more about their culture. As for me, Il Shan, Benjamin, Poh HS and Shoki, we joined Quintus's group at a later time (for some reason). I realised that after the outing with the Swedish, I got to know the sec1s in the group better.

In general, we made friends with the Swedish, knew more about their lifestyle, and made them feel hospitable. Yay! I've got to express gratitude to the following people:

- Guo Zhi, for being such a good guide, spending much effort, introducing many aspects of our culture to the Swedish and also spending so much money on the trip itself.

- Shoki, for also being a good tour guide, running around and calling on his phone for umpteen times to make sure the trip goes smoothly.

- And last of all, Poh HS, for making the trip such a funny one. Haha.

So... And that's it, for the first post.
